Useful information when visiting Vietnam

Prior to your visit

•     Many nationalities can get an e‑visa online; apply early.
•     Keep digital and printed copies of your passport and visa.

Travel

•     Domestic flights are the fastest way between north, central, and south.
•     Flights are inexpensive and save time on long distances.
•     Trains along the coast are scenic but slow; the Reunification Express is iconic.
•     Grab (ride‑hailing) is reliable in cities.
•     Motorbikes are everywhere — rent only if you’re confident in chaotic traffic.

Food

Vietnamese cuisine changes dramatically as you move.
•     North: subtle, balanced flavours (phở, bún chả).
•     Central: spicy, bold, royal‑influenced dishes (bún bò Huế).
•     South: sweeter, herb‑heavy, tropical (cơm tấm, bánh xèo).
Tips:
•     Eat where locals eat — busy places mean fresh food.
•     Street food is excellent; choose vendors with high turnover.
•     Coffee culture is serious — try cà phê sữa đá (iced coffee with condensed milk).

Money & Payments

•     Cash is still widely used, especially in markets and small shops.
•     ATMs are common; avoid airport exchange counters.
•     Cards are accepted in hotels and larger restaurants.

Weather & Comfort

Vietnam spans multiple climate zones.
•     North: cold winters, hot summers.
•     Central: typhoon season (Sept–Nov).
•     South: tropical — dry season (Dec–Apr) is ideal.
Plan around the region you’re visiting.

Cultural & Etiquette

•     Vietnam wakes early — morning markets are a joy.
•     Crossing the street is an art: walk slowly and predictably; traffic flows around you.
•     Bargaining is normal in markets, but not in restaurants.
•     Dress modestly for temples and pagodas.

Language & Communication

•     English is common in tourist areas, less so in rural regions.

History & Ancient Sites

•     Book popular sites (Ha Long Bay cruises, Cu Chi Tunnels) in advance.
